Date of Approval
Champix pills were approved by European Commission in October 2006 and by FDA in May 2006 as Chantix. Zyban was approved for marketing in the UK in June 2000 and by FDA in May 1997.

Champix pills help in reducing nicotine cravings and withdrawal effects associated with smoking cessation. Zyban was designed initially for treating a condition called major depressive disorder but was later found to have smoking cessation benefits too.
Working
Champix pills work by blocking the nicotine receptors in the brain that cause addiction and in this way help in smoking cessation. The mechanism and reason behind anti-smoking properties of Zyban is not yet established.

The active ingredient in Champix pills is 'Varenicline Tartrate'. The active ingredient in Zyban is 'Bupropion Hydrochloride'.
Success Rate in Clinical Trials
Champix pills in 12 week clinical trials showed success rate of 44% in smoking cessation and a further one year study showed 22% abstinence.
In a 12 week study, it was found that the smoking cessation success rate of Zyban was 29.5 % and in a year's study the abstinence rate was found to be 16%.
Dosage
Champix pills dosage of 1 mg. twice a day is more effective than any other smoking cessation medicine dosage.
Zyban dosage of 150 mg. twice daily works better than placebo but is less effective than Champix pills.
Contraindication
Champix pills are not recommended in combination with any other smoking cessation medicines. Combination treatment of Zyban and other nicotine replacement therapies is often prescribed for smoking cessation.
